Scorecard

overall 7.8/10
Speed8.0/10
Quality8.0/10
Ecosystem7.0/10
Pricing Value8.0/10
Ease of Use8.0/10

The good

  • 01Cascade is one of the strongest agentic task runners available: long-running, multi-step work is its home turf
  • 02Tab autocomplete is unlimited on every plan, including Free, and never touches your quota
  • 03Cognition's acquisition brought Devin's autonomous DNA into the product
  • 04Codemaps and parallel agents give Cascade real project-wide context, not just file-local edits
  • 05Clean, purpose-built UI that makes Cascade feel native rather than bolted on

The not-so-good

  • 01Smaller extension ecosystem than VS Code forks: niche extensions may not exist
  • 022025 was chaotic: a failed OpenAI deal, leadership departures to Google, and then a Cognition acquisition
  • 03Pricing restructured in March 2026 from credits to quotas; new subscribers pay $20 (up from $15)
  • 04Community is growing but still thinner than Cursor's or Copilot's
Best for
  • →Developers who want agent-first workflows out of the box
  • →Anyone intrigued by Devin-style autonomy inside a traditional IDE
  • →Indie developers and small teams who value unlimited autocomplete on free tier
  • →Projects that benefit from multi-step agentic reasoning over quick inline completions
Less ideal for
  • →Developers heavily invested in specific VS Code extensions
  • →Teams that need long-term vendor stability guarantees
  • →Enterprise environments with strict tooling procurement policies

Our take

Windsurf has had a wilder ride than any other tool on this list. Codeium launched it in late 2024 as a clean-sheet AI editor. By mid-2025, OpenAI was pursuing an acquisition; that deal expired without closing, Google hired away part of the leadership team, and Cognition AI (the company behind the Devin agent) acquired the remaining Windsurf business in a roughly $250M deal.

The Cognition era has been productive, even as the product absorbs a lot of organizational change. Successive "Wave" releases have merged Devin's autonomous task-execution engine into Windsurf's interactive editor, and features like Codemaps give Cascade genuine whole-repository context rather than file-local edits. Its proprietary SWE-1.5 model is available even on the free tier, and parallel agent sessions let it handle the kind of long-running, multi-file tasks that most editors still struggle with.

The March 2026 pricing restructure raised Pro from $15 to $20/month and swapped credits for daily/weekly quotas. The silver lining: Tab autocomplete remains unlimited and free on every plan, including the free tier. That's a meaningful differentiator for developers who mostly want fast completions and only occasionally reach for the agentic features.

The honest concern is stability. Even though the product itself is strong, the company story has been unusually turbulent. If you're evaluating this for a team, it's worth watching how the Cognition integration keeps playing out. For individual developers willing to tolerate a little vendor uncertainty, the actual product is in the best shape it has ever been.
